Way back when, I remember using a program called "xvidtune" that
essentially allowed you to tweak the display by editing a modeline in
realtime.  It presented the numbers currently active in the modeline,
and you could scroll through them and tweak.

I have no idea whatever happened to it, maybe it's still there somewhere
in the split-into-pieces xorg.  Still, google is our friend.  I'll check
tomorrow.
