If the networks were smart (nothing wrong with hope, right?), they would get
together and create some sort of open streaming API. Much like cable
provides a standard platform for a variety of channels. This open API would
provide a standard platform for streaming their individual channels. Then
they can each control their own content and advertisements (like they do on
cable channels), and it would open the door to all sorts of new distribution
channels like Boxee or an iPhone App can provide. They would have more
people watching in more places. Sure the cable companies wouldn't like it
but who is worried about hurting their feelings. It seems like a pipe dream
now, but it sure would be nice for app developers to be able to develop
around a single api and then get access to every bit of content the networks
want to throw at them.
