That's workable enough. Just fix it at 720p.
It will waste some space as you record SD channels as 720p but that's
going to be relatively minor since the stuff is heavily compressed coming
out of HD-PVR to begin with.
Compared to SD content coming off of a digital OTA channel, it's really
not that wasteful.
