mpp's fix of commenting out the three zlib output handler lines in  
mythweb.conf did the trick... although I hope it hasn't inadvertently  
broken something else. I also added extension=mysql.so to the php.ini file  
(although that alone didn't fix the problem, mpp's fix finally did the job).

For future reference on this issue, this fix worked on a Mythbuntu 8.10  
system with Myth 0.21.20080304-1...
