With my Pinnacle 800i card I have to make sure mythbackend is stopped to
use the command line scan util. For cable (Clear-QAM) I run this:

scan /usr/share/doc/dvb-utils/examples/scan/atsc/us-Cable-Standard-center-frequencies-QAM256 > channels.conf

When it finishes I just cat the file to see what it found.
