I have my frontend using suspend to RAM and I recommend it as a great
tradeoff between power savings and power on speed. I have a dual core
Intel of some sort that my Killowatt meter registers at about 83 watts
idle. Once the PC is suspended to RAM it takes only 9 watts.

Suspend from RAM takes about 3-5 seconds (it is ready as fast as my TV
is). My USB IR device will wake it up from sleep so I can turn
everything on with my remote.

All I had to do was enable suspend to RAM in my kernel, add an irexec
command to hibernate on the IR power button, and a few small changes to
tell the system USB devices should wake up the system.
