Hi David,
Sorry, I should have explained better and perhaps looked deeper; I can 
store the files on HDD or as suggested, dual layer. My problem was that 
the transcoding process out of the mythtv "recorded TV" folder always 
wants to reduce the resolution.

However, I see now that I can simply copy the relevant .mpg files out of 
/var/lib/mythtv/recordings folder and rename them and then process them 
with more accommodating software (like rendering the source into HQ mkv. 
  The new DIVX on windows does that rather nicely.
