Submitting files is out of the question.

Usually, it's pretty academic actually.
What's to understand? I don't need to use the internal player on
a day to day basis so I don't. I try it every so often to see if it
has improved enough to replace my external player. When it fails I
forget it again for that release.
I wouldn't even think about it if not for the idea that the use
of external players should go away. A feature that seems to work well
enough and not cause any other problems is being removed for no apparent
reason other than someone's ideas on aesthetics.
Being able to "shell out" for some oddball bit of media is probably
something that will always remain useful even when the internal player
is more or less on par with the dedicated media players.
You never know when some new format will come along and the external
players are probably in a better position to quickly adapt to such a thing.

Obviously we differ on what sort of change constitutes appropriate.

...so you will force a lot of people to interrupt their established
practices and their own idea of consistent just so that yours can be
realized. That's not an appropriate change, that's a gratuitous one.
That actually sounds a lot like what Microsoft likes to do.
