Typically what's done is to use something like --timeout=3 in
/etc/auto.master when configuring the automounter for this drive.
This automatically unmounts the drive after 3 seconds of idle time,
which is usually enough time between when you stop using the drive and
when your hand gets to it to yank it out.

that have discussions of how to configure autofs for these types of
things.
