No, I have tried all of that stuff before.  But, like I said, I
haven't yet tried with "alsa:device=iec958=1" either, so it may be
that I just can't pass S/PDIF over HDMI on my motherboard.  I will
check it out tonight and report back here.

And Steven, I have tried plughw and it gives the same result.
