Ill take it no one has this problem.   I have spent some more time
troubleshooting and it appears to show only when mythfrontend is
loaded from the .fluxbox/startup file.  If i load it from xterm it
works fine.

Any suggestions?  is there some why i can load xterm then have it load myth?
