Just to clarify that, and simplifying rather a lot ...
HDCP is a means for the originator of a media stream (eg an HD disk
player) to determine that the downstream components as far as the
physical display are all HDCP complaint and have a valid licence key.
Each component in the chain is responsible for checking that the next
component is compliant and licenced - and it's a condition of getting
a licence key (and not having it revoked*) that it does this.
If the source of the media stream is not protected, then none of this
need take place and the HDCP doesn't have to be invoked. The fact
that your Linux box doesn't support HDCP doesn't affect it using the
TV - the TV doesn't care, it just supports HDCP and will respond IF
the source interrogates it.
* The system allows the disk to carry a list of revoked keys, and the
player can refuse to play the disk if any component in the chain is
using one of them.
