Wow! Thanks for the tips!  For what it's worth, after reading your reply 
I did a 'mysqlcheck' on the database in another window and everything 
looked fine.  I went back to my mythfrontend and went into another 
recording.  After I hit FF and RW a few times, the remote stopped 
responding altogether inside the frontend and never returned even though 
  'irw' was registering the clicks.
