Does your system stubbornly boot into low res. say 640x480 or 800x600
and even though your /etc/X11/xorg.conf shows that the "nvidia" drivers
are used? If so, attempt to see if one of your capture/tuner/encoder
cards uses the Conexant cx18x chip. Try dmesg | grep cx18 and see if
you get a hit. The Hauppague HVR-1600 uses this chip. If cx18 shows
up, you may be experiencing a tricky nvidia binary incompatibility.
Fortunately there is a work around.

(Other symptoms: sudo nvidia-settings says "you appear to not be using
nvidia..." even though the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file clearly specifies
"nvidia" drivers. Also when you run sudo nvidia-xconfig, it outputs a
valid /etc/X11/xorg.conf file but after rebooting, you are still stuck
at low res.)

Your symptoms? Read this: (Thanks 76GTA and others)
