I have always had a UPS connected to my master backend. This is also
my main computer at home so its not your average low end machine.

These are generally specified in minutes of runtime not hours. Well
unless you load them at less than 1/4 of their specifications and you
get one with 2 or more at least 7.2AH batteries. I recently upgraded
my ups to a ~50 lb APC 1400 XL. It has 2 18AH batteries I believe.
This supposedly will give me around 2 hours of runtime at the ~ 100W
idle I get on my quad core with 4 drives running.. I paid $185 US at
ebay for the used 1400XL shipped with new batteries. Normally this is
a $500+ UPS.

I have that on a second ups. The old 1000VA PowerComm King Pro that
used to give me about 1 hour of runtime.

BTW, for a cheap UPS I recommend the 1000VA to 1500VA PCM King Pro
units. We have dozens of these at work and they work well. They run
well use the same batteries as many APC units. I generally replace the
batteries with 9AH tempest batteries from batteryspec for adound $18
US per battery (unit requires 2).
