I've been using DISH for a couple of years with good results, with SD only. I
use the S-Video output of a 722 DISH receiver into a PVR-150.
Controlling the receiver can be a chore. I use an old MyBlaster and have
never had any problems.
Some DTV receivers can be controlled directly (no pun intended) with a
serial cable, all of the DISH receivers need an IR blaster of some sort to
change channels.
The only way to record HD from satellite is to use an HD-PVR, but you said
you're not interested in that.
If all you want is SD, satellite should work fine for you, the hardest part
will be getting an IR blaster set up, but it's do-able.
