There's no reason it shouldn't work just fine like that.

Search the mailing list archive. Summary is that it requires patching 
(unless you're running Fedora) and may not yet be stable. Some folks 
have had lockups of the hdpvr while recording w/the IR part active.

There's no possible way they can (legally) block the component outputs.
