I should probably try the IR recevier to see if that works.  I don't
intend to use that capability, so I went straight to the blaster.

FWIW, I've been using the 0.8.5 lirc_imon driver with 0.8.3 user space
without problems for quite some time.

I wouldn't expect you to be able to debug low-level problems remotely
without a lot more information.  At this point, I'm mainly looking for
high level advice along the lines of "That shouldn't happen", "If it
does happen, try resetting it by running...", or "Yes, a different
model STB might work better".
