[mythtv-users] Inconsistent KeyAuthentication success in ssh logins

I have set up a number of ssh logins on various platforms
successfully, but I am stumped with configuring my mythtv login on my
MythTV backend. At the moment, I can ssh into it from frontends on
the lan and get right in with key authentication. I can ssh in from
PCs on the lan using PuTTY and get right in with key authentication.
I can ssh in from the firewall running OpenWRT and get right in with
key authentication. I can even ssh from the wan into the firewall and
get right in with key authentication (and now that's the _only_ way
from the wan).

_However_, when I try to ssh thru the firewall to the backend, it
_always_ reverts to password authentication and I am stumped. I have
scoured /etc/ssh/ssh_config and /etc/ssh/sshd_config. I have
carefully examined the contents and permissions of ~mythtv,
~mythtv/.ssh, and ~mythtv/.ssh/*, and found nothing to explain why
this one ssh path is treated differently. FWIW, I do _not_ have
SELinux installed/in use and this is still a Fedora Core 6 system.

Can anyone suggest an explanation/solution?

TIA,

Craig.
