It is possibly useful if your 1080p display will accept 1080i and
has it's own high quality deinterlacer. But as you say it wont work
with VDPAU (as far as I know), and hence even if you did get a slight
improvement in image quality, it may not be worth it for the CPU
usage. And you would get an improvement only if the displays
deinterlacer is better than the VDPAU ones.

For people using a 1080i capable display but not using VDPAU, yes
worth a try.
