If it's a backup made with mysqldump, yes, you should be able to restore 
it on a different version of MySQL.  A mysqldump backup is just a series 
of SQL statements that will recreate the database; it doesn't care about 
versions or word size or endianness.

It's only the binary files you have to be careful about moving.
