Although I have not checked into software ( i believe NUT supports
this) I use a powercom ups king pro 1000VA unit.

It costs $150 US and it will run my mythtv box for over 45 minutes
even with aging batteries. The unit has 2 of the same 12V batteries
that go in a lot of APC units. I get them online for around $19 per
battery shipped.
