Thank you so much for your speedy ideas.

I do not. I will enable it on the bios next time I move a monitor over
and reboot . I am measuring energy consumption now so I will be able to
compare. I didn't realise it worked with linux.

I will install the powernowd when I enable the bios thingy.

I do ssh into the box now, for everything other than reinstalling the OS
and changing the bios, though I did mess up the network settings once.

Sorry for asking such a stupid question but will ssh -X -Y ..... still
work if I remove the video card from the server?

I would not be allowed to cut holes in the cupboard at the moment,
though next time we decorate I might. The cupboard is next to a unused
chimney. I might be able to do something with that.

I'll look into the serial console though I'm not keen on changing the bios.

Sadly all of my PCI slots are full with TV cards. I didn't choose very
wisely when I bought it as I hadn't spotted that PCIe cards weren't well
supported on linux at the time and it only has 3 PCI slots.

The PSU is already an 80Plus so it is at least 80% efficient down to 20%
load and at the moment I am loading it more than that. And I do
understand that cool and quiet won't help at full load, but full load
will generally be from 9pm -2 am so the room is cooling anyway by then.
Is there anyway to may commercial flagging wait until 2 in the morning?
