did you try looking at /var/log/firewall?  dmesg will also let you
know about dropped packets due to the firewall.  Also, you're not
running SELinux, are you?  Have you taken a look at 'netstat -an' to
ensure that the backend is actually listening?  It should be on TCP
6543 and 6544.
