That worked! I swear I've tried this before, I must have just been using 
codes that LIRC didn't like. For the record the code I entered for the 
volume buttons was 0001. The Mute button was still recognized under my 
original configuration so I did not use irrecord to record the codes for 
that button. Interesting workaround but I'm so glad it works now. It was 
such a pain to have to press the volume down button 10 times when I 
would change channels to a really loud channel and vice versa.
