I'm not convinced that's true, but admittedly I haven't tried it in this 
  particular application.

For databases it's often the seek speed that matters, not so much the 
data rate.  Flash drives have excellent seek speed.

The Asus EeePC has a solid state disk, and one of the Eee user groups 
did some interesting calculations estimating its lifespan:

You can read it and draw your own conclusions.  Keep in mind the figures 
in the table are for continuous writing, which isn't realistic for a 
database application.
