You say "view content from a UPNP source other then Mythtv". So, you
want to find a UPNP server other then Mythtv. Like Swisscenter or WizD,
right? But then you talk about XBMC which is a client AFAIK.

I'm going to assume you want to view Mythtv programs using mythtv's UPNP
server. However, I would suggest you stick to mythtv clients. You
don't have to run a real front end if that's what you're worried about.
There are light weight mythtv clients that run under windows and
clients that run on media extenders. Speaking natively to a mythtv
server is feature rich. If you use the UPNP server you are giving up a
lot (i.e. commercial skipping for one).

But if you really want to use the Mythtv UPNP server... I have had
limited luck w/the media software that comes on HP vista computer (it
only plays back NTSC mythtv recordings, ATSC doesn't work at all - not
even SD ATSC).

As w/all things microsoft, the lines are blurred (is this actually
microsoft's media center re-branded w/an HP logo) and rich with
advertisement (it always takes me a while to find the UPNP client as the
media centre software always wants me to play back junk off the internet).
