Deleting them through the frontend (or mythweb) doesn't work: I get
the following message in the backend log:
"ERROR when trying to delete file: file does not exist.  Database
metadata will not be removed"

This version of myth.find_orphans.pl showed up with a mythbuntu update
I did 2 weeks ago.

My database is backed up.  My (1.5 TB) recordings directory is not.
The script would have deleted all of the files in my recordings
directory.
