You /need/ to (or, put more generally, /everyone/ should) enable:
Extra audio buffering
Enable this setting if MythTV is playing "crackly" audio and you are
using hardware encoding. This setting will have no effect on MPEG-4 or
RTJPEG video. MythTV will keep extra audio data in its internal buffers
to workaround this bug.
Completely ignore the whole "hardware encoding" thing as that hasn't
applied since people started to get already-encoded MPEG-2 from other
sources (such as DVB).
Note, also, that this setting is on by default, so someone has disabled
it on your system... :)
