Unfortunately that didn't quite do it, though it might be a fraction better so I'll keep playing with the vram settings to see if a little more tweaking one way or the other helps. 
By the way as background I have my playback settings per these instructions http://code.google.com/p/atv-bootloader/wiki/mythtv

One other thing too, mythfrontend is showing the following on screen when I exit mid-playback :

2008-10-02 17:25:54.590 NVP: prebuffering pause
2008-10-02 17:25:55.790 NVP: prebuffering pause
etc..etc..
