converter boxes to all their subscribers...". I understand that some
cable operators have done that already or are planning to (and it may
vary by Comcast region). Incidentally, here in Sacramento they did
something similar back in 93-94, during one of the oscillations of
"regulated" vs "unregulated" cable -- they scrambled all but the most
basic channels and had distribution centers set up at local pharmacies
for everyone to pick up a converter. Then a few years back they
switched back and all of the extended basic channels are free&clear on
analog (but now they've been moving 2-3 channels a year over to
digital-only)

IMO, the cable companies are being intentionally vague, running ads
that say "relax, you're covered", without saying when or whether
you'll need a converter box. For me, the main reason we stick with
cable is the ability to plug all the TVs/PVR-150s directly into the
wall and get all of our channels. If I'm going to need to rent
multiple converters and deal with IR blasters and such anyway, might
as well use a HDHomerun for direct OTA networks and a cheap satellite
package for the rest.
