I think the confusion comes from the fact that both mplayer and MythTV
use ffmpeg as their main library for media playback. (I said main, I
know they use other libraries, etc. as well). Since ffmpeg is so
closely tied to mplayer (share web space and developers) many people
formulate this misconception.
