I'm sure it was related to the version of the intel driver - I tried all 
sorts of different permutations, and was just about to give up on 
configuring it on the TV when I tried Mythbuntu as a last resort.  Not 
only did it come up with X right away, it came up in full 1080p right away.

If it were doing more than just being a frontend (and mythjobqueue host) 
then I'd give it more effort to get gentoo going, since that's my distro 
of choice, but for a frontend, mythbuntu's ease of use is pretty hard to 
beat.
