By the way.  I also ran "smartctl --test=short /dev/sdb" which apparently
self-tests the hard drive and when I look at the health information using
"smartctl -H /dev/sdb" it reports that the test had a read failure:

smartctl is an excellent tool.  I wish I knew more about how to use it.
