Most likely--assuming proper filesystem permissions--you have 
driver/firmware/capture card issues such that the card isn't returning 
any data.

And neither backend can create recordings, now?  Did UID's/GID's change 
in the upgrade?  NFS uses UID/GID (rather than user name/group name) to 
determine whether a user has permissions on the filesystem.
