I was wondering that as well.  I have separate frontend/backend
machines, each with 512MB.  That's what they had when I got them used.
 I was going to add more, but I've never even seen them use up what
they have.

I play almost nothing but HD on the frontend and the backend often
records three HD shows while doing some commflagging at the same time.
 No problems what so ever.
