Oops, the different email addresses (at least those shown by gmail)
confused me so I didn't realize it was the OP.  One thing he doesn't
mention is whether or not he is loading the firmware from
http://steventoth.net/linux/hvr1800/ into
/lib/firmware/<kernel-version>.  That's the only thing I can think of.
