I didn't plan on stretching the video either. The main issue is that
currently I have a 4:3 55" hdtv by philips, but eventually I'll go with a
lcd/plasma tv, and it'll be widescreen. If my transcoded video is done at
4:3, and there are black bars at the top, then the actual video part won't
reach the top of the lcd/plasma display, and I'll end up with black bars on
the top/bottom AND on the left/right sides of the video. So my future 55"
lcd tv will be showing a 40" picture when you consider the black bars all
around. I know stretch is an option, but hopefully there is a way to fix it
in the transcoded video so I don't have to ever worry about stretch/fill
stuff during playback.

Try recording a 4:3 video with black bars on top, then play it back on a
widescreen display, you'll see exactly what I mean.

As for having ivtv detect that, that would be pretty nice. Where would I
even start on getting that working? Any ideas?

-Thanks
