I'm not sure that this completely address your concerns as it is still
flushing data to disk, but it could go hand in hand with what you
want.  Write the data to a ramdisk and then sync the ramdisk with a
HD, if you wait for a long period between the syncs then it would be
good for things like live tv if you have a large enough ramdrive.  The
next logical step would be to have a hybrid ram/hd drive.  The system
would have a partition the size of the HD but when you were writing
you would write to the ramdrive which would periodically sync with the
HD.
