I don't think the situation is that dire. XvMC does not necessarily
mean PureVideo. In fact, nVidia is moving away from XvMC and instead
towards using shaders on the GPU, and THAT'S what they're calling
PureVideo.

Not only that, but XvMC functions independant of your output device.
XvMC will work perfectly well via VGA. Though whether that's an option
on your TV, I can only guess. I would check your X logs to see if XvMC
is getting enabled.
