Agreed. I have 10TB+ (formatted) of software raid 5 and 6 (dozens of
250,320 and now a few 750GB drives) at work and it works very well for
us to store our millions of medical images. Software raid (5 or 6) can
be very easily moved from one machine to another while switching the
drive controller from one brand to another. The cpu usage for any
recent machine should be under 10% while writing possibly more during
a raid rebuild (which should be very infrequent). Most of my 3+ year
old opterons at work never hit more than 7% cpu usage for the raid.
With that said writing speed can be better in hardware not because of
cpu usage but mainly because of the cache that a lot of these hardware
cards have.

I suggested the 3ware route because if you want to go hardware raid 6.
With raid 6 I believe you should have at minimum 6 drives (otherwise
raid 5 or 10 is better) and having two $325 highpoint cards to achieve
that does not make a lot of sense to me. On top of that I know
highpoint is more of third rate raid card vendor from the 3ware and
areca. I consider adaptec on a level in between the two as they do not
have the quality they had 10 to 15 years ago with scsi cards.
