The first thing i would suggest is go buy a nvidia card.  I use my onboard
6150 nvidia card.  Then install the nvidia drivers.  from the GUI
nvidia-settings utility you should be up and running in 10 mins.

With the GUI all you have to do is push detect displays and place the new
monitor in the right location, apply and restart X.

I currently have use this setup and have myth on my 1080p projector and a
15" LCD for admin work.
