mplayer -fs -zoom -quiet -vo xv -vfm ffmpeg -lavdopts  
fast:skiploopfilter=all -cache 8192 -ao alsa:device=spdif -ac hwac3 - 
channels 6 -monitoraspect 1360/768 %s

That comfortably plays (70-80% CPU) 720p h264 content on my linux  
powered apple tv, I am unsure about nitotv.
