Number 2 for me.  Learned Linux for my job several years ago, then 
learned about MythTV, and invested some time to learn about it and 
finally set it up.  Couldn't be happier.

I don't really hate Microsoft - it's more of a dislike for their 
anti-competitve, anti-open, anti-standards behavior.
