For me, it's the ability to run all the devices that can output 
component video into my magic-auto-switch.

As for others, I don't know, but I will note that DVD players have been 
able to output component video and sound over S/PDIF for years.  My 
ancient Fisher DVD player has this ability, my Playstation 2 can do 
this, and the other two big game consoles can do this, in addition to 
HDMI.  This is also how I have my current Myth box set up for playback.
