I think that's your problem right there. It's very likely that Ubuntu's 
stock mythtv build is compiled for i686. 0.21 is more aggressive with 
CPU-specific optimizations than 0.20 was.

You'll need to recompile Myth on your system. Same thing happened to me -- I 
build myth on one i686-class box, and run it on a different i586-class box. 
It took a few seconds of Googling to figure out that it was dumping core 
when it was hitting an illegal i686-specific instruction.
