Sorry to reply to my own thread but I've fixed it now - utlimatly it was 
because the bind-address in /etc/mysql/my.cnf was changed to localhost - 
I changed to my IP 192.168.0.6 and hey-presto it works again.

Now how do I downgrade my ubuntu and debian frontends back to 0.20?
