I've just tracked down a similar problem on my backend, which I never
use as a frontend (apart from today :-( ). The default playback profile
(Normal) now has the de-interlacer set to greedy2x. On my 1600 Duron
backend with an Nvidia geforce2 , that was enough to bring my
backend/frontend to its knees ! I set the de-interlacer to my prefered
bob2x. or easier still, just set the profile to slim. Dropped the cpu
right back and now it plays smoothly. Might not be your problem, but
worth checking.

best of luck

john
