My guess is its because you are trying to run it as root (from the
central cron). Try running it as your MythTV user (the user who runs
the front end).
If it works running it from the command line, then run it from that
user's crontab (run "crontab -e" as that user) and add the proper cron
details there...). I daily run mythrename.pl, optimize_mythdb.pl and
mythconverg_backup.pl all from my myth user's cron and it works fine.
