Not sure if this'll help you, but are you sure that you're running the 
frontend with the correct user?  Once I mistakenly ran my mythfrontend 
as root instead of my mythtv user and saw a similar "Failed to read" 
error, since the lirc config files didn't exist in root's home 
directory.  I'm on Fedora 8 though.

Just a thought. If that's not it, I'm sorry I can't be more help.
